Social Mobility & Education

May 3, 2019

This morning in the Education Select Committee we quizzed Board Members from the Government's 'Opportunity Areas' which are intended to help with social mobility and education. There's clearly some good practise and it's making a difference to those areas that were chosen, but I question the logic of some of the choices when 7 of the 9 Districts in Nottinghamshire/Nottingham appear at the bottom of the social mobility tables and yet we weren't selected back in 2016. Sadly Mansfield was 8th from bottom of the social mobility tables.

I asked the panel about how they work with the Department for Education and tried to establish whether these are truly independent local panels, or simply an 'accountable' face for the DfE.
