The 6th of October, is silver Sunday - a day of free, fun events and activities for older people which aims to bring people together and change the story around loneliness in the UK.
I know this is a serious case of planning ahead (forgive me for escaping all the Brexit chaos for a few hours!) but it's also a day which highlights really important issues in our society. To celebrate the day I'm teaming up with the brilliant Scarlett Sykes, Mansfield Youth Mayor, to promote local events.
We are planning to connect young people with the older generation within the Mansfield and Warsop area by getting them to write letters to each other. We are going to need some volunteers who would like to engage with children from several schools who have already agreed to take part in the letter writing.
Silver Sunday increases the awareness of elderly isolation and celebrates the knowledge and contribution of older people. As Scarlett said, it should be an event that brings the youth and elderly together to help tackle loneliness.
Other events, such as a community meal, are also being planned for October, which we hope will become a regular activity. If you are interested in taking part in writing letters, or becoming involved in any other way we would love to hear from you, please contact my office on 01623 372016.
