On Wednesday I attended an Education Select Committee session with the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds, to talk about key issues affecting education in Mansfield and the whole country. We discussed a number of topics including Special Educational Needs provision, careers advice and Brexit planning. The Secretary of State responded with a number of important points...
He assured me that the government is keen to ensure that children have access to good quality advice on the wide range of career options that are available including apprenticeships. He highlighted his belief in the importance of further learning opportunities beyond university education such as colleges and other learning providers which can provide different career opportunities.
We also discussed Brexit (shockingly) and the way that this may affect education. He again assured me that the Department is well prepared; looking at a number of areas including British students studying at oversees universities and those that participate on exchanges or study abroad programmes.
Ministers are also looking at the ways in which schools can be supported in terms of Special Educational Needs provision. This includes sharing best practice guidance for behaviour management and ensuring that proportionate and constructive behaviour management programmes are in place in all schools.
I was pleased to have the opportunity to question the Secretary of State. It was a great opportunity to raise topics that are important locally in Mansfield. the issues of careers guidance and special eduction needs are issues have been raised with me directly by local parents in surgeries but also by teachers when I have visited schools across Mansfield and Warsop. The Government is working hard to support apprenticeships and technical education but there is still more to do.
Mansfield has a high number of students requiring extra support in schools and I am pushing the Government to ensure that the necessary funding and support is available in Nottinghamshire so that all children receive the support that they need to thrive in school.
