Queen's Speech

October 14, 2019

A really welcome and positive Queen's Speech this morning, which stated confirmation of Government's plans to exit the EU on 31st October, and then to take full advantage of those opportunities with legislation on trade, agriculture, financial services, immigration and fisheries amongst others. All key elements of post-Brexit Britain.

The rest of the speech focused on domestic priorities, including a strong stance on law and order. There will be new laws to make sentencing stronger, tackle violence and improve safety in prisons, to protect police, to take firmer action against foreign offenders in the UK, and to offer more support to victims. Tackling crime is a huge priority for this Government, which is brilliant news!

There were 22 new Bills announced for the coming session of Parliament, and as well as crime, they focused on finally tackling the challenge of sustainable Adult Social Care, improving our environment, investing in infrastructure around the whole of the UK, fairer practices in employment, including ensuring that workers (not bosses) keep their tips, and animal welfare legislation, amongst others.

Fantastic to see a positive agenda to be delivered - if only Corbyn would stop blocking everything and let us get on with it..

I'll be in the Chamber today to contribute to the debate, keep an eye out on Parliament TV! I'll be posting my speech shortly.
