I am really pleased to welcome the announcement that the Home Secretary has promised Nottinghamshire Police officers protection in and out of the job through a Police Covenant. This announcement follows a campaign that I supported, which the Government has listened and responded positively to!
I was one of 60 Conservative MPs backing a Blue Collar Conservatism (BCC) campaign demanding that the next Prime Minister introduced a Covenant, which would include measures to protect the mental health of service and retired officers, equip officers with the right resources and necessary powers to do the job.
It had won the backing of all 19 Conservative Police and Crime Commissioners up and down the country, the Police Superintendents' Association and the Chair of the Police Federation of England.
I'm from a family of police officers and I really value the work of our officers and the risks that they take in an increasingly challenging role. They deserve more support and it's about time we restore our reputation as the party of law and order, and the party that is tough on crime.
This is a great first step to ensure that the next Prime Minister really does take action to support our officers.
